Maciej Rapacz (Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza): Digital Origen? On transformers-based generation of interlinear machine translations of New Testament from Ancient Greek to Polish and English.

In most cases, the purpose of machine translation is to provide precise and natural translations, which often means that the syntax of the source language in the target text is not accurately reflected. Meanwhile, in some cases, such as interlinear translation, maintaining this structure in the target text is crucial.

In my talk, I will present the results of research on the use of encoder-decoder models from the T5 family for interlinear translation from Ancient Greek into Polish and English, using the New Testament as a corpus of texts.

The research consists of a comparison of the multilingual model (mT5) with dedicated models trained on ancient Greek (PhilTa, GreTa) and an assessment of the impact of morphological metadata coding methods on the final quality of the generated translations.
